New Years Day

On New Years Day we woke up surprisingly not hungover and since it was a lovely sunny day we put our walking boots on to do some Hong Kong hiking!

People have told us hiking is really easy in Hong Kong and that the paths are all really clear/obvious and you can't get lost so we set off with just the GPS on our phones and no proper map... small mistake! I also possibly underestimated the walk - 9 miles and a few hills over to the beach at Stanley - fortunately Stephen isn't as daft as me so ensured we took lots of water!

The first climb - steps, lots of them!
First view of the city from up high
View back down towards where we live
City getting closer
I think it's about here we somehow got lost.... not entirely sure what happened but we ended up walking round in circles, clambering on rocks along side a stream, walking around drainage channels for when there's heavy rain and water pours off the hills and finally scrambling up a very steep hill along a very vague path!
Stephen decided that as long as we walked up we would eventually find the path we were supposed to be on.... he was correct and look at the view when we eventually got to the top and found the path again!
Excited about BBQ potential for future!
After the initial climb it was a really nice walk along well defined paths in the sunshine (except I didn't realise how sunny it was and so had to go to work the next day with a very red sunburnt face!).
We then had to start climbing again... we were tired!
Once at the top of that, we then had to get to the top of this....
Pretty

Still climbing...
Then when you though you were almost there there were steps steps and more steps!!
Finally at the very top :)
Once you're at the top you have to come back down.... lots of steep steps so this was pretty quick.
The path down to Stanley (we got a bus into the actual town once we came off the trail since the road didn't have a pavement and there were too many fast cars for my liking!).
And once in Stanley well we deserved chips after 10miles (the extra mile is getting lost!) and 900m climbing! And good chips they were too - New York Fries - yum!
And once home and showered we decided to treat ourselves to drinks at the rooftop bar at the hotel down the road, especially since we were back in time for happy hour!
